When someone is considering a podcast as a medium, how do they know if it’s for them?

A lot of the people that I’m working with already have businesses which are awesome. If they have a business, a lot of the time doing a podcast will just help them with engagement. I remember chatting to Pat Flynn when he started his business he felt like his audience knew him better. The engagement is so much better. Of course, you feel really connected. You feel like you know them. So, if you already have a business and you just really want to connect a lot better, then definitely go ahead.”

How complicated is it to create a podcast?

“I really feel like if your audience is listening to audio content, it makes perfect sense. But it doesn’t necessarily make a lot of sense for a lot of people. So there’s a lot of buzz around it and I have a bunch of friends that have top podcasts that make a ridiculous amount of money. I know a lot of people that have a couple hundred downloads a month and they’re like ‘Well this is a lot of work, I’m not seeing a lot of return.’ It’s a lot of work and you really have to seek consistency. There’re so many people that have stopped. I think it’s either way, even if you want to start one and stop it, I think it’s amazing for you to just get better.”

What are the most important things to consider?

  • “Looking back I was so nervous and now I’ve done it so many times. Even if you have a podcast simply for getting better at speaking and more comfortable and less nervous, it’s totally worth it. Even if it’s just for that. But it can take a long time. So you really want to make sure that you’re seeing the results and the fruits of your labor.”
  • “I don’t recommend anybody starting a podcast to make money. Let’s say I want to start a podcast and make money from sponsorships, that really a hard road, unless you already know what you’re doing or you’ve been to other spaces that are similar. It’s a number’s game.”
  • “I personally suggest that everybody have the audience and the business models set up so that you know that it will work like a validated business.”
