5 Reasons you should do what you love

The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win, you’re still a rat.” – Lily Tomlin

The glaring problem I see most in the business world today, is people not doing what they love. They either get into doing something because someone has made some money out of it, or even worse, they’ve just always done something. In their words, “I don’t know how to do anything else.” Sometimes if you’ve been blessed with doing something you really love and it is all you know to do, you are in the ideal space. The issue with that space though is that we still don’t get paid really well for what we love and know to do.

Let me start with the 5 reasons why you should do what you love…

1. The Flow Derivative

There is an unexplainable phenomenon that happens when you do what you love. It is like the universe decides that because you are doing what you love, it will help you along the way. It will send the right people you need to talk to (see reason 2), and it will assist in removing obstacles (or the illusion of) as well. I’m not entirely sure if the obstacles are removed or they are easy to overcome because you are loving what you do.

But, something happens. It is very difficult to outline because it is hard to put into words. Only people that have been in this privileged position will understand what I mean. But, trust me on this one.

2. The Attraction Principle

Once you are in flow, you start attracting the right people and the right opportunities. I am certain that this doesn’t work the other way around. As an example, you can’t decide that you would like to attract high-performing business coaches because they have the money. Then work your whole business from that point.

This is where authenticity and being genuine will cripple you. See reason 5. I do however realise that this can be a temptation. Whenever this happens, think about the times when a dodgy person tried to sell to you.

3. The Time Illusion

Chris Rock has a brilliant stand-up segment where he explains the difference between having a job and having career. He talks about the time when he used to have ‘a job’ washing dishes. And, when he would think that at least 2 hours had passed, and he would look at the clock it would only be 15 minutes. We’ve all been in the position where we don’t want to get out of bed to do what’s on the agenda for the day. However, once you do what you love, there isn’t enough time to make all your ideas happen. You are just like a pig in shit or a fat kid on a cupcake.

Time just flies.

4. The Decision Clarity

When you love what you do, decision making suddenly becomes easier. It becomes easier because you are so aware of your priorities and why they matter, why you are the best person to do what you are doing, and most importantly who you are serving. When you know all that, the decisions that were once hard become easy. Don’t get me wrong, there will still be disappointment if that decision impacts some people. But, you know why you are making the decision and what indecision would bring to the people who mean the most to you.

5. The Authentic Factor

When you love what you do, you can’t hide the excitement from your eyes when you talk about it. In fact there will be people that ask you to not talk about it. Why? Well, it makes them uncomfortable. Your job isn’t to worry about those people, but the people that want to hear from you and about what you do. When you do what you love, you will attract the people that want you – and, lots of them.
