What would’ve made it easier/What would you have changed?

If I was now 25 again, you know I probably I would still be wanting to use my voice in some way and I probably would have just gone straight into recording a podcast because I wouldn’t have needed all of that extra stuff.

What are the first mistakes that Podcasters often make?

The sound is definitely a big one. Here are some top tips.

Make sure that you are happy – like you are smiling. The person that you are interviewing is probably going to be quite excited because they are talking about that something passionate to them. So I think it’s really important to be aware of the other person’s energy. Sometimes you’ll get a guest into a total monotone and you really want to help to encourage them lift their own energy and you can only do that is lift your own.

But I think it’s really important to remember to smile all the time because it totally changes your voice if you’re smiling. When I was working in the radio, this was one thing that I really learned because you know, you have to smile so that your face is about to smash in half. You got to be like a hundred times more animated to get the same excitement in your voice. So if you think you’re smiling enough then smile a bit more.

What are the most important things to consider?

You want make sure you really connected to your audience and I think that’s the most important thing – that connection. And then obviously from my perspective Audio comes the close second because you can have the best message in the world but then if people can’t connect to it because of bad audio, then it’s cutting that connection off there. So I think there needs to be a marriage of both. I think the message is more important than the vehicle I guess but if you got the message, then I think it’s really important to have really good audio to make your message more impactful.

Which podcast should I follow, why and how often?

I love Lewis Howes. And then I love Jonathan Fields of Good Life Project. That’s one of my favorites. So I love how curious he is. And then I dig James Schramko. I love listening to him. I did an intro for Samantha Nolan Smith who just started a podcast called Change the Game and I really dig that. I love listening to that.
